Quick Thinking Deputy Nabs Kidnapper

New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Taylor Balcombe for 2nd Degree Kidnapping and common law robbery.  Late Sunday evening Balcombe asked his grandfather Robert Covil for a ride to pick up a friend in the Castle Hayne area. Balcombe was unable to locate his friend and became agitated. Covil became concerned and put his hand on his .9mm pistol he keeps in the vehicle. Balcombe lunged for the weapon and wrestled it away from his grandfather, stating “Papa you’re going where I tell you”! Balcombe instructed his grandfather to drive to Leland. While driving to Leland Covil noticed he was behind a New Hanover County Sheriff’s vehicle. Covil flashed his lights a couple of times.  Deputy G. McMillan quickly fell in behind Covil and made an investigatory vehicle stop. Deputy McMillan called for assistance from the Leland Police Department. Once stopped Balcombe quickly surrendered, was placed under arrest and transported to the New Hanover County Detention Facility where he received a $25,000.00 secure bond. Covil was not injured and returned home.
