The New Hanover County Detention Facility has a list of programs it offers to inmates while in the custody of the Sheriff. One of the programs is the General Education Development. Since the GED program was re-instated the facility has had roughly 60 inmates participate. The majority of the inmates that have participated did not remain in custody long enough to complete all pretesting required to sit for the GED exam. However, nine inmates have completed all pre-testing required, took the GED exam in August and have received their GED. Currently the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has 10 inmates enrolled in the GED program. In addition, there are 2 inmate “tutors” that assist with the GED program. They have already received their GED and play a pivotal role in the education process.
