Sheriff McMahon Utilizes Inmate Workers to Save Cost
New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon is utilizing inmate workers at the county landfill to pick up trash. The Sheriff has assigned four inmate workers to the county landfill five days a week from 8 am until 1 pm to pick up blow off trash and debris. McMahon was approached with the idea last month with some way of utilizing inmates to help offset resources at the county landfill. Captain MacNeish with the Detention Division organized the plan to have inmates pick up the blow off trash and debris therefore allowing Environmental Services to reallocate their resources more efficiently. “Sheriff McMahon challenged his senior staff with providing new ideas on how the Sheriff’s Office could save money, this is the third project in which we’ve utilized inmate workers in the county”, stated Sergeant Jerry Brewer.
