Detectives with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Vice and Narcotics Division announced Friday September 14, 2012, that Joseph Scott Apodaca and Jessie Layne McCallie were arrested as the result of near year-long investigation. Detectives executed a Search Warrant at a residence on Bird Nest Court (in Wilmington) where the couple resides. Inside the house detectives seized a quantity of prescription medications containing controlled substances. Detective E. K. Luther learned during his investigation that Apodaca and McCallie received lawful prescriptions from legitimate physicians. Where violations of State law began was when the couple began to repackage their prescriptions and sell them other people. During the investigation Apodaca sold amphetamines and opiate based pain medication containing oxycodone to an undercover agent. Cash and a combat style shotgun were recovered along with a small safe.
Apodaca and McCallie were taken to the New Hanover County Detention Facility and brought before Magistate. Apodaca was given a $500,000.00 secure bond for 20 criminal charges ranging from Possession of Drug Paraphernalia to Trafficking in Opium. McCallie received a $300,000.00 bond for 7 criminal charges including Trafficking in Opium. Detective Luther said that some aspects of the investigation are still on-going with respect to identifying co-conspirators and customers.
