NEW HANOVER – Earlier today Sheriff Ed McMahon and District Attorney Ben David addressed members of the media and provided an investigative update in two significant ongoing investigations.
Detectives have charged Amy Blanche Stewart with two additional charges for obtaining property by false pretense, a Class I Felony under North Carolina Law. Amy Stewart was charged in December for the concealment of death after Deputies found the body of her mother being kept in a bedroom since June of 2009. Investigators have released the concealment was for monetary gain. Amy Stewart accepted and deposited just under $8400 in benefits from annuity retirement and social security benefits.
Detectives, working closely with the New Hanover County District Attorney’s Office have charged Mary Douglas Bruno with accessory to murder after the fact. This comes as a result of additional information based on numerous witness statements and the review of physical evidence. Mary Bruno first told investigators she was drugged and held in an incoherent state for two days, this information has been verified as inaccurate. Dennis Benjamin Roy was charged last week with first degree murder after the discovery of Carmine Bruno’s body was found beaten to death in his garage.
