NEW HANOVER – By 6:30 p.m. Deputies were responding to an increased volume of calls for service due to the icy conditions in the northern part of New Hanover County.
Most bridges and overpasses were completely iced over by 7pm as officials with the Department of Transportation worked diligently to treat the roadways. Three collisions on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge forced its closure until about 7:30 p.m. Several other collisions and hazardous conditions required a response on N. College Road near I-140 and on I-40 near I-40.
Up-t0-the minute conditions and hazardous areas were documented on our website at www.NewHanoverSheriff.com. Citizens were also alerted via Nixle, Twitter and our NHSO Alert System.
