NEW HANOVER – Sheriff McMahon formed a Sex Offender Task Force earlier this summer, tasked with the verification process of all sex offenders registered in New Hanover County.
Verifying the registry in New Hanover County concluded with a review of 237 offenders, 48 of which are currently incarcerated. The task force was formed with two full time employees assigned to the Sex Offender Unit and four additional deputies. The team made 320 attempts to verify the 189 physical address locations, totaling 1,047 man hours.
The summer operation resulted in the discovery of two unregistered offenders, nine arrest warrants issued and six arrests that included one offender being extradited from Virginia. The Sheriff’s Office is still searching for three offenders – Gary Dean Reed, Jamahl Lequane Taylor and Nieto Martez Middlebrooks. Once located, they face charges for failure to register/change address.
So far this year the Sheriff’s Office has made 14 arrests for sex offender violations.
