Boy, 10, Drowns at Fort Fisher Recreation Area
NEW HANOVER – Just before 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Deputies were requested to assist EMS, Fire and Ocean Rescue Personnel with a suspected drowning at the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area.
Initial responders reported lifeguards entered the water, rescued three distressed swimmers but were unable to locate a 10-year-old male, who was swimming with his parents and 15-year-old brother.
Officials expanded the resources to include New Hanover Regional EMS and Helicopter Airlink, Ocean Rescue personnel from Kure Beach and Carolina Beach, Federal Point Fire & Rescue, New Hanover County Fire Services, U.S. Coast Guard, Kure Beach Police, Wilmington Police Helicopter SABLE and the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office – Marine Unit/Dive Team.
The victim, Master Emanuel Carter, 10 years old of Sanford, was located during a grid search being conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard helicopter. Carter was transported by ambulance to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
