NEW HANOVER – Twelve law enforcement professionals from Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, Wilmington Police Department, Carteret County Sheriff’s Office, Jacksonville Police Department and Onslow County Sheriff’s Office recently completed Crisis Intervention Training.
The local chapter of NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) and the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has sponsored the training since 2007. Since then, about 50 officers from New Hanover and sourrounding counties have completed the training.
The purpose of this training is to further educate officers on how to handle individuals with a mental illness, especially in sensitive situations or with someone who is threatening to harm themselves.
Each of the twelve officers who recently completed the training were awarded a certificate and a Crisis Intervention Team lapel pin.
