NEW HANOVER – Today marks the start of a new era in the leadership of the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. At 6:30 a.m. the official ceremony began with opening remarks by Chief Deputy Larry Hines, followed by prayer delivered by Pastor Alan Benson of Grace Baptist Church. Chief Deputy Ed McMahon was sworn in as the next Sheriff of New Hanover County by the Honorable Brenda A. Tucker, New Hanover Clerk of Superior Court. Approximately 327 deputies and 100 civilians who make up the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office also took their oath before their new leader. After the oaths were administered Sheriff McMahon told deputies he wouldn’t ask anything of them that he wouldn’t ask of himself. Shortly after the ceremony, McMahon told reporters of several initiatives that would be implemented to include a promotional ceremony to announce changes and reorganization as well as a Sheriff’s Citizen Academy that is scheduled to begin later this year.
