Giant Ground Sloth

Large SkeletonVisit one of the Cape Fear region's oldest residents.

Cape Fear Museum's Giant Ground Sloth skeleton is a replica of a creature that lived up to 1.5 million years ago in what became Wilmington. Our sloth's bones are made from the remains of one found near Randall Parkway in 1991. While exploring the exhibit, visitors can:

  • Reveal the differences between a giant ground sloth and dinosaurs
  • Discover some real fossils found at the dig site
  • Touch replica fossils and find them on the skeleton
  • Step into a giant ground sloth footprint and see how your own foot compares

The original skeleton is housed in the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, in Raleigh.
