Off Duty Deputy Recognizes Foul Play

An off duty Sergeant with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office noticed a white Ford pick-up truck behind Tri County Properties located at 2608 North College Rd around 10 am Wednesday morning.  The Sergeant observed two men by the truck and notified the patrol supervisor. Shortly thereafter two deputies arrived on scene and observed the two men emerging from the woods behind the business dropping a sledgehammer and crowbar on the ground.  The Deputies detained both suspects until Detectives arrived.  Detectives processed the scene and discovered the footprints of both suspects’ boots matched the footprints from the bricks inside the house, where a fireplace insert had been stolen. Detectives located the fireplace insert in the bed of the truck the men were driving.  Both men were charged with B&E as well as possession of burglary tools and taken to the New Hanover County Detention Facility.
