NHSO Detectives Catch Thief
On May 11, 2012 the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Detectives responded to 4424 Bridgeport Drive for Breaking and Entering. A flat screen television and Canon Power Shot digital camera were stolen from the residence. Detectives began the investigation and CSI processed the scene. The home owner gave detectives security video which revealed a male subject with dark hair wearing white plaid shorts, white shirt (design on front) and dark gloves. On May 13, 2012 Deputies responded to 4424 Bridgeport Drive a second time for a security alarm. While on scene Deputies noticed a white Toyota Camry pull into the cul-de-sac, pause and then turned around. Deputies followed the vehicle and then initiated a traffic stop at the residence where the vehicle stopped. Deputies questioned the driver of the vehicle, Matthew McClure Walthall, a 28 year old white male, who gave consent to search the vehicle and his bedroom. Walthall opened a safe in his room for Detectives which had a Canon Power Shot digital camera in it. Detectives reviewed the photographs from the camera and determined that photos from the camera were from the victim’s home. Detectives also located a pair of white plaid shorts and a dark pair of gloves which matched what the suspect was wearing in the original break in. Detectives then placed Walthall under arrest and transported him to the New Hanover County Detention Facility. Walthall has been charged with Breaking and Entering, Larceny after B&E, and Possession of Stolen Goods. He was given a $12,000.00 secure bond.
