UPDATE: Detectives Charge Student with Filing a False Report

 

NEW HANOVER – Detectives are investigating the report of an alleged rape of a female student Wednesday.

The incident allegedly happened in a school bathroom adjacent to the football field at Ashley High School – and involved a male student as the alleged perpetrator.

The student reported the incident to a relative last night who notified the Sheriff’s Office.  An investigation was begun and continues.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

UPDATE:  Thursday, February 25, 2010 at 10:00 p.m.

As Detectives continue to investigate the alleged rape they have determined the incident did not occur, as earlier reported.  This investigation remains under investigation and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

UPDATE:  Friday, February 26, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.

Detectives have arrested and charged the student who first reported she was raped by another student on Wednesday.  Heather Marie Conklin, 17 of Wilmington, first told Detectives she was raped in a bathroom adjacent to the football fields at Ashley High School.  Conklin later admitted the incident was consensual.  Detectives have since charged Conklin with filing a false police report – a Class 2 Misdemeanor.  Conklin was released from the New Hanover County Detention Facility after posting a $500 secured bond.
