Retired SBI Agent Appointed to Key Role in Sheriff’s Office

NEW HANOVER – On Tuesday, New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon appointed retired SBI Special Agent-in-Charge Stephen Netherland to the Professional Standards Section. Netherland was hired by Sheriff McMahon as a Detective and will be an integral part of the section that handles internal affairs, recruitment and employment backgrounds.

Netherland, a 1981 graduate of North Carolina State University began his law enforcement career with the Raleigh Police Department. In 1984, Stephen joined the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and served in many capacities during his twenty-six years of continued service to the citizens of North Carolina. Stephen retired as the Special Agent-in-Charge of the Coastal District. With his newest assignment, Netherland will report to First Sergeant Mike King who currently handles the Internal Affairs of the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

Netherland, a resident of New Hanover County, has deep roots in the Wilmington area. He and his wife Janis have made Wilmington their home since 1986.

“Stephen is a well-respected and proven leader in the law enforcement community across the state and his experience and skill will play a vital role in the renewed professionalism and forward progression of the Sheriff’s Office,” said Sheriff McMahon.
