The Volunteer Intervention Prevention & Response Unit (VIPR) was established as a cost effective means to augment the deputies on the street and utilize the talents, experience and dedication of our citizens of New Hanover County to serve as volunteers.  These volunteers must undergo and complete mandatory training as outlined by the Sheriff.  They would then assist with residential and business checks, assist motorist, set up the SMART trailer, fill in for Crossing Guards and any other non-tactical duties the Sheriff deem appropriate.
