The Patrol Division provides the basic law enforcement protection for the people of New Hanover.  As the uniformed deputy is usually the first representative a citizen of New Hanover County may encounter in times of crisis, this division is the flagship of the Sheriff's Office.

The commander of this division holds the rank of captain with an assistant holding the rank of lieutenant.  There are other lieutenants which command the individual sections.  Under these section commanders are sergeants and corporals.

The goal of this division is to prevent crime by deterring those who would violate the law through highly visible proactive patrolling of the county.  To accomplish this objective deputies rapidly and prudently respond to calls for aid, conduct thorough preliminary investigations, and assist the citizens of this county with a myriad of legal, medical, social, and humanitarian problems.

All of the Deputies receive constant hours of in-service and school training in various areas to provide a wide range of technical expertise and knowledge to better serves our citizens.

This division is operational twenty-four hours a day, three hundred and sixty-five days a year.  The Patrol Division has four squads (A, B, C, and D).  Each squad has a Sergeant who supervises the shift, and five patrol deputies.  The deputies are assigned to different sections of New Hanover County's 199 square mile area.

Each squad works a twelve-hour rotating shift, with the deputies rotating to either day or night shift.  The schedule allows each squad to be off-duty every other weekend.

Deputies patrol their assigned sectors and respond to calls for service and constantly face dangerous situations.  During the night, officers check buildings and keep a keen eye focused on suspicious vehicles and persons.

This division has many specialized sections and units all of which make up the team.  These are:
