Since
1991, the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office’s Explosives Ordnance Unit has been
accredited, and served the citizens of
Wilmington
and
New
Hanover
County. The E.O.D. provides emergency explosives
support to the
County
of
New Hanover
as well as the counties that surround us, and their local
agencies.
The
primary goals of the E.O.D. Unit are to protect lives, reduce damage to
resources and operational assets from explosives/hazardous items and
situations, and restore normal business operations as soon as
possible. The E.O.D. Unit’s mission is accomplished by rapidly
mobilizing hazard device technicians with technical information, highly
specialized equipment and tools to effectively neutralize, remove, or
dispose of the various hazards.
When
the E.O.D. Unit responds to calls where suspicious items have been
discovered, the items are diagnosed and a determination is made of the
item’s degree of harm. The degree of harm determines the disposition
the item.

** NOTE: It
is very important to remember to never handle any suspicious items,
military ordnance or any type of explosive device. If you locate any
such items call 9-1-1 immediately.
