The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office Special Response Team (SRT) was officially formed in August of 2009 following nearly seven years of research and planning. This research included statistics and foresight into the future of Detention and Correctional facilities nationwide. Special Response Team (SRT) training covers a large spectrum of responses to include assaults, riots, barricade situations, hostage negotiations, hostage rescue, along with high risk escort and transportation.


The Sheriff's Special Response Team (SRT) is a Special Operations Unit comprised of highly motivated skilled Officers trained in the de-escalation and control of emergency situations.

 The (SRT) Team adheres to strict and specialized policies and procedures dictated by the New Hanover Sheriff's Office, all procedures and operations are conducted in conjunction with the Standard Operating Procedures of the Detention Division. The techniques and training is developed by some of the country’s leading authorities in less-lethal in corrections and detention environments.
