As a
Detention Officer you will be assigned to the Detention
Division. The Detention Division is responsible for the
custody and control of all detainees, whether awaiting trial
or under sentence. Within the division, Detention Officers
will be given the opportunity to work in such specialized
areas as:
-
Intake/Receiving –
Responsible for admitting and releasing all detainees
that enter the facility.
-
Classification
– Responsible for reviewing the history (medical,
seriousness of charge, assault nature , etc.) of all
detainees admitted to the facility and determining the
appropriate housing assignment.

Augmentation/Escort
– Responsible for assisting with movement of detainees
within the facility.
-
Transportation –
Responsible for transporting prisoners to hospital and
prison facilities located throughout the State.

QUALIFICATIONS
AGE - Applicants
must be at least 21 years of age.
EDUCATION - At a minimum, an applicant must
have graduated from an accredited high school or hold an
approved General Education Development certificate (GED).
CITIZENSHIP - Applicants must be citizens of
the United States.
CRIMINAL HISTORY - Pursuant to the rules and
regulations promulgated by the North Carolina Sheriff’s
Training & Standards Commission applicants must not have
committed nor have been convicted of any criminal
offense as of the date of the application to be
qualified as a Detention Officer.
MILITARY SERVICE - Applicants who have prior
military service must have received an honorable
discharge from active military service.
POLYGRAPH/CVSA EXAMINATION - Applicants must
pass a pre-employment polygraph or computer voice stress
analysis.
BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION - Applicants must
satisfactory pass a thorough background investigation,
including a check of State and Federal Bureau of
Investigation records.
PHYSICAL EXAM - Applicants must successfully
pass a physical examination and drug screening.
PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAM - Applicants must receive
a favorable recommendation from a psychological
evaluation.
