The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office Public Information Unit's mission is to ensure that the citizens in this community are empowered with the most current information about crime as it relates to their community. It is our belief that citizens can better protect themselves from victimization when they are informed.

Our unit is located at the Sheriff's Office located at 3950 Juvenile Center Road, Castle Hayne, North Carolina.

The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office maintains jurisdiction throughout New Hanover County. There are four police departments in our county: Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach. The Sheriff's Office is not permitted to release reports or speak on behalf of these municipal agencies.

The information below will introduce you to the various media resources established by the NHSO. We hope that these resources assist you in your daily coverage of the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office.

Booking Photos, Reports, Beat Calls

Interviews

Chief Deputy Ed McMahon serves as spokesperson for all interviews on behalf of the Sheriff's Office. Requests for interviews can be facilitated through First Sergeant T.L. Fuss.

Website

The Public Information Team is equipped with advanced technology. Therefore, they can promptly distribute information from anywhere in the field. They utilize the Media and Current News sections of the website to ensure that information is promptly and fairly distributed to all media outlets. All news releases are posted under the "Media & Community Releases" section. If available, booking photos and incident reports will also be attached to the news release on-line. During significant and breaking news stories, the PIO team will post information related to breaking news on the Media and Community Releases section of the website. This information will include the location of a PIO on scene, media staging areas, any current public information about the scene, as well as announce upcoming press conferences. This site is utilized to ensure that all media outlets have equal and prompt access to accurate information about breaking news.

On-call PIO

The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office of Public Information does not operate on a 24-hour schedule. However, the PIO Unit is on-call after hours. They are only available for significant news stories and catastrophic events. All booking reports and photos should be requested before 5 p.m. on weekdays. Should a story break late in the workday, the PIO unit will make arrangements to accommodate the needs of the media. To reach the PIO after hours please call (910) 297-9303.

Traffic Accidents

The North Carolina Highway Patrol maintains jurisdiction along North Carolina's highways. In the event that there is a serious traffic accident we recommend that you contact the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
